If you haven't already heard of PVRIS...one, you obviously haven't spent enough time on our MXP-Music Xchange Program Facebook page, cause we've kinda gushed over them a lot! And two, you've probably not been to the Vans Warped Tour in the Northeast in the past two years where PVRIS has played select dates to an extremely lucky crowd who can soon say "I saw then when". This week PVRIS (pronounced as if that were an "A" instead of a "V"...an upside down "A" in fact and not pronounced like P-Virus, as the fans of the video game Resident Evil would like) release their debut full-length album titled 'White Noise'.
Needless to say, those here at MXP are quite a bit excited for its release. We were one of the lucky ones who caught PVRIS on the Vans Warped Tour in both 2013 & 2014...and impress us they did, especially this past show in July of this year where they tried out quite a few new songs (including "St. Patrick", "My House", "Smoke", & our new favorite "Fire") to an energetic crowd on one of the side stages. We see main stage status for sure if they decide to play Warped again in 2015.
- The first official single off of White Noise..."St. Patrick".
The band, consisting of singer/guitarist/keyboardist Lynn Gunnulfsen, guitarist/keyboardist Alex Babinski, & bassist/keyboardist Brian MacDonald started out in Lowell, MA only a few years ago. Originally a five piece under the name Paris, two of the founding members left the band and the remaining members would make the name change to PVRIS to prevent any legal issues and to make the band easier to Google and find online...not unlike the reason the band Chvrches altered their name. The band rocked from the start, and Lynn's hauntingly powerful vocals were easily a highlight of their sound and live shows. They recently changed up their sound a bit to incorporate a more synth-pop rock element that allows them to continue the heavy undertones while adding an almost spooky vibe to some of their songs. Evoking comparisons to early Paramore (if you rock and have a female lead singer it seems this comparison is bound to happen) their new sound also channels Shiny Toy Guns, Versant, and Versa. In fact, Blake Harnage of the band Versa produced 'White Noise'. Continuing their forward motion, the band announced in June of this year that they were signed to Rise Records...making headlines as the first & only female fronted band on the label. -Title track audio only video for "White Noise"
With the release of 'White Noise', consisting of 10 stellar songs that are engaging & incredibly pleasing to the ears with biting lyrics like this line from "Holy"...“You're shallow and empty and filled with regret / I think that chest must be heavy from that cross on your neck you only wear 'cause you're weary of what comes next after you're death / Don't think I didn't notice.” and "Haven't you heard / I'm not yours anymore" from "My House"...the expectations within the music community continue to grow. PVRIS is the definition of "one to keep an eye on" and 'White Noise' is just the beginning.
- My House
Check out the official videos for "St. Patrick" & "My House" attached in this blog along with their Empty Room Sessions videos which showcase the bands chops in an acoustic and almost eerie setting and some other videos highlighting songs from the new album. The talent is definitely there and Lynn Gunnulfsen is a star in the making. We have the album on repeat...
